Day 7 - May 22nd - Kunsthistorisches Museum, Cafe Central, MAK design museum

Today we woke up to rain - varying from drizzling to pouring. We all got out our umbrellas and rain coats to brave the elements. First we wanted to go check out the Nascht Market one more time since some of us didn’t get our fill of souvenirs. Unfortunately for us, the selection was even worse than what we had previously seen. After we wandered around there for awhile, Lori and I realized we had lost Kaitlyn and Nicole, and after looking for them for quite some time, we decided to stick to our plan to meet Heather and Suzanne at their Marriot, hoping that Kaitlyn and Nicole would show up. Thankfully they did and we all headed out to meet Amy for the day of museums and cathedrals. For a break from the rain, Amy showed us St. Augustine’s Cathedral, which was beautiful. The statues in there were amazing, and we all stood there admiring it for a while.

We then went to another cathedral that had a huge, amazing ‘Last Supper’ mosaic on the wall.

Then she dropped us off at the Kunsthistorisches Museums, and we looked at the stuff in there for awhile. It really was a nice museum and had beautiful paintings, some of which I even recognized from my Art History classes.

We (Suzanne, Heather, Lori, Nicole and I) came to the end of the museum (so we thought) rather quickly and decided we needed food now. Later we found out from Kaitlyn that we actually missed some cool parts of it, but we weren’t too sad about it. Our plan was to meet at Café Central later, so we just chose to leave right then. We eventually found the Café, which is apparently quite famous and we felt underdressed. Suzanne was very kind and paid for our meal again.

Beef Goulash

It was quite the experience, but I didn’t really think my goulash was all that good. Kaitlyn caught up with us halfway through our meal and ordered something, then we all shared the most delicious apple strudel with vanilla cream sauce that I’ve ever had. It was heaven.

Stevie never showed up, so we went home to our hostel for a few hours to decompress and to collect Stevie, then we went to the MAK design museum, which was free that night. It was still muggy and raining when we got there, and none of us felt very energized or motivated again; there was no AC in the museum, and we were all exhausted. After we walked through all the displays of chairs, armoires, sketches, a few paintings, kitchenware, sculptures and textiles, Heather and Suzanne left, leaving a few of the girls still looking.

This was one of the weirder chairs there

A few of us then went to hang out in the gift shop while we waited for them, and it actually turned out to be a pretty good place to hang out. They had really cool (expensive) souvenirs and books and things that kept our attention for quite awhile, then they also had two benches facing each other in a little alcove by a window, where we all sat to wait out the downpour before we headed home. I thought this museum was pretty cool, but wished it had AC because it was so hot.

All in all, coming home to this is never a let-down....
